UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres has voiced deep concern over the deteriorating humanitarian situation in Gaza, condemning the continued loss of civilian lives. He reiterated his demand for an immediate and permanent ceasefire, alongside the “unconditional and immediate” release of all hostages.
In a statement released by his spokesperson, Guterres condemned the recent attacks on areas sheltering displaced civilians and locations providing food, which caused numerous Palestinian casualties. The statement also emphasized the importance of full, safe, and sustained humanitarian access.
Guterres appealed for full, safe, and sustained humanitarian access in the region so that aid can reach people. He has called for all parties to adhere to international law, and for an immediate and permanent ceasefire.
Guterres highlighted the critical lack of fuel entering Gaza for over 17 weeks, impacting essential services and increasing the potential for further loss of life. He warned that without fuel, vital infrastructure such as incubators, ambulances, and water purification systems, would fail.
Furthermore, he noted the potential halt of the United Nations and its partners’ delivery of life-saving aid within Gaza.
Separately, former US President Donald Trump announced Israel’s agreement to the necessary conditions to finalise a 60-day ceasefire. He urged Hamas to accept the deal, forewarning of the consequences if they did not. Reports indicate that Hamas is still holding 50 hostages.
