In response to recent reports, Air India has refuted claims of compelling the families of AI-171 crash victims to disclose financial dependency for compensation purposes. The airline has firmly rejected the allegations, describing them as ‘unsubstantiated’ and ‘inaccurate.’ The controversy arose from reports suggesting that families were being forced to reveal their financial dependence on the deceased as a condition for receiving compensation. However, Air India clarified that requesting this information is part of a standard process aimed at efficiently distributing interim compensation to the correct recipients. Air India stated that they are committed to processing interim compensation payments as quickly as possible to address the urgent financial needs of the affected families, with initial payments being made soon after the accident. To facilitate these payments, the airline requested basic information to establish family relationships, guaranteeing that the funds reach the eligible recipients. A questionnaire was provided, allowing families to indicate their financial dependence on the deceased. A Facilitation Centre was established in Ahmedabad where families could complete the questionnaire, and it was also available via email. Air India has distributed interim compensation to several families and continues to engage with the remaining families to expedite fund releases. The airline, part of the Tata Group, reiterated its dedication to integrity and community service during this difficult time. The Tata Group has also announced voluntary ex-gratia payments to the families of the deceased. Air India has cautioned the public against misinformation and misrepresentation of the facts.
