Odisha Vigilance has taken an accountant into custody for accepting a bribe. The incident occurred at the Block Education Office (BEO) in Kujanga, Jagatsinghpur district. The accountant, identified as Suryakanta Swain, was allegedly caught accepting Rs 5,000 from a teacher. The bribe was demanded for the processing of the teacher’s house building advance of Rs 1,50,000. Despite the advance being approved by the government, Swain was delaying the billing process. The teacher, seeking resolution, reported the demand to Vigilance officials, leading to the sting operation. During the operation, the accountant was caught in his office while receiving the bribe. The recovered money has been seized. Vigilance is now conducting searches at two locations associated with Swain to determine if he possesses assets disproportionate to his known income. A case has been filed, and the investigation is ongoing.
