Amit Shah, the Union Home Minister, has denounced the Emergency imposed in 1975, calling it a period defined by injustice and the Congress party’s pursuit of power. He announced that the Modi government will commemorate June 25 as ‘Samvidhan Hatya Diwas’ to make the younger generation aware of the Emergency’s impact on India. Shah’s remarks on X highlighted the suffering endured by citizens and emphasized the importance of remembering how citizens can stand against dictatorship. He accused the Congress of suppressing the press and suppressing opposition voices. The Union Cabinet observed a moment of silence, paying tribute to those who suffered during the Emergency. The Cabinet also approved a resolution to mark 50 years since the declaration of the Emergency, labeling it as a significant event in which the Indian Constitution was undermined. The resolution underlined India’s ongoing commitment to democratic values.
