With the continuous rise in road traffic and vehicular speeds, the need for improved road safety measures is clear. The Indian government has decided to enforce ABS on all two-wheelers sold in the country from January 2026. The decision is driven by the increasing number of road accidents and related fatalities. The mandate will necessitate the addition of ABS, along with the provision of two certified helmets per vehicle, which will be managed by dealerships. Although largely supported, the change will likely cause an increase in prices, especially for entry-level motorcycles. The addition of ABS hardware, including front disc brakes and single-channel ABS, is anticipated to raise prices by ₹6,000 to ₹10,000 for certain models, particularly those around the ₹60,000 price point. The Ministry is expected to release comprehensive guidelines soon.
