Following a deadly accident involving Mumbai local trains, Indian Railways will be undertaking a comprehensive redesign of its non-AC train fleet. The redesign, spurred by a tragic incident that resulted in the deaths of four commuters, will incorporate key safety and comfort features. The modifications will include the installation of auto-closing doors to prevent falls and improve ventilation to counter potential issues of suffocation. The Railway Board has outlined that the improved ventilation will be achieved through the inclusion of louvres on the doors and the implementation of roof-mounted ventilation systems. The project is targeted for completion by November 2025, with the upgraded trains scheduled to be operational by January 2026, subject to successful testing and certification. Additionally, the new coaches will feature vestibules to allow passengers to move between carriages, aiding in the even distribution of passenger loads.
