The cricketing world is buzzing with the prospect of Shreyas Iyer taking on the captaincy role for the Indian white-ball team, fueled by his exceptional performance in the recent IPL season. While the Punjab Kings didn’t win the IPL, Iyer’s leadership and strategic acumen were evident throughout the tournament. Having previously captained the Kolkata Knight Riders to victory, Iyer’s exclusion from their team was a surprise. This season, playing for a new team, he has excelled as both a batsman and a leader.
“Right now he just plays ODIs but after this IPL we can’t keep him out of T20 internationals and even Tests. Plus he also has now officially joined the white-ball captaincy race,” a source indicated.
Iyer’s IPL 2025 stats are impressive, ranking him second among the team’s top run-scorers. He amassed 604 runs in 17 matches, with an impressive average of over 50 and a strike rate of 174.69. His season’s peak came in the opening match against Gujarat Titans, where he scored 97 runs. Furthermore, Iyer’s captaincy record includes a significant number of wins in both T20 and List A formats, highlighting his strategic prowess. He is the only captain to lead a team to 3 finals in the White ball format.
