Raipur, CGnews: India, Feb 18, 2008 (AFP) — Thirteen Maoist rebels and six police were killed in gunbattles in the eastern Indian state of Chhattisgarh Monday as heavy fighting continued for a third day in a neighbouring state, police said.
According to government estimates, Maoists are active in 15 of the 19 districts in Chhattisgarh.
Thirteen battalions of CRPF have been deployed for anti-naxal operation with the operational command under state Chief Minister.

Union Home Minister Shivraj Patil has recently said the Centre would give five more battalions of paramilitary forces to the state to combat naxals.
The violence in Chhattisgarh broke out as security forces clashed with Maoist guerrillas for a third day in neighbouring Orissa state where the rebels killed 13 police and a civilian during the weekend.
At least 20 rebels and three security forces have died so far in retaliatory attacks in Orissa.
Police also recovered 115 rifles, one carbine and a truck full of ammunition which the rebels had looted from police posts during their weekend attack, Orissa's director general of police Gopal Chandra Nanda said.
At least 600 troops, backed by army helicopters are engaged in the gunbattle in Orissa's remote jungles, around 250 kilometers (150 miles) from Bhubaneswar.
TOI reported: Friday’s Naxal attack on police stations in Orissa’s Nayagarh district is the latest wake-up call for India’s security mandarins. With every passing day, the Maoist guerrillas seem to be tightening their grip on the country, claiming some 500 lives every year. In some areas, the situation is so alarming that Prime Minister Manmohan Singh recently described the menace as a “virus” that threatens the very idea of India. He asked states to pool their resources and crush the leftist rebellion once and for all.

The state police forces are ill-equipped, poorly trained and lack motivation to take on the highly organised insurgents. Now, the Union home ministry is planning to tackle this problem by helping the states. Question here asked by the opposition and families of the victims why did Left supported UPA government remain silent uptil now. Why Congress took help Naxalites in Andhra to facilitate them for making strong base in Chhattisgarh, Orissa and Jharkhand. Why did govt on the advice of Left and Sonia Gandhi become friendly to the Maoists of Nepal? Maoist violence not biggest security challenge: Patil
