The police said Tejaswini asked Shukla to arrange the money. When he failed to do so, she asked him to mastermind the dangerous plot to raise the amount, the police alleged.
Shivshankar Shukla, 20, son of Security Officer of BALCO unit in Korba, a student of the Bhilai Institute of Technology, Durg, and his 19-year-old friend T. Tejaswani, who is also an IT student of that institute, were arrested on Jan 17 night from a railway station in Champa, Chhattisgarh, just two hours after they allegedly stabbed the woman as mentioned above.
According to their plan the accused duo, came to Korba city and went to the house of Municipality Sub-Engineer K P Gupta, who is known to the boy's family.
The duo accused after a chat with Gupta's wife Sadhna, 37 years-old, tied her to a chair and demanded Rs 10 lakh from her. On not getting the money, they stabbed her multiple times, the police officer Gupta said.
When Sadhna said she had no money with her, Shukla allegedly stuffed her mouth with a piece of cloth and stabbed her repeatedly until she succumbed to her injuries, Police official Gupta said.
"After killing the lady, both the accused ransacked the house in search of money. Failing to find anything, the duo fled from the city. But within two hours they were trapped by the police at Champa railway station when they were about to board a train," the official added.
Sadhna was taken to a hospital, where she was declared brought dead. Her son, who tried to intervene, was injured in the attack, he said.
The students were nabbed from Champa railway station, about 15 km from here Thursday night. The knife used in the attack was seized from them, he added.
They have been booked for murder and extortion, and will be produced Friday before a court for remand.
